Our CTO Borut writes:

As part of UNIKI community engagement I joined the ranks of mentors at 1st Slovenian CoderDojo which took place at our office building on Saturday. The experience with kids was fantastic as they dived into MIT’s Scratch graphical programming environment without any real introduction, and under mentors’ supervision created some twenty colorful games or interactive stories in Scratch parlance.

I was mentoring Justin and Ema, and one of the things that kind of surprised me is that kids have the ability to effortlessly invent and upgrade the story indefinitely, but still manage to keep the narrative consistent. Here, the Scratch’s built-in drawing and sound recording tools help a lot to engage kids’ imagination. In fact, most of the kids skipped one of the planned brakes to keep drawing and programming so they could finish their game in designated time!

I also supervised one of the older kids Jan, who tried Processing, which we at UNIKI use for prototyping purposes. This was a bit more challenging as it is all done in code, but by the end of the session we managed to have some basic animations running!

I have to admit that I was a bit tired after a 4-hour mentoring session, but it is an invaluable experience to see the little ones engaged in a creative process, and, dare I say, learn from their approaches. As this was a first, I surely hope it will become a regular event in the future. Thanks to organizers Dušan, Blaž, Jernej, other mentors, and of course the kids and their parents who made it a great dojo!

At UNIKI we always love to experiment with newest sensing and tracking technologies and right now we are thrilled about this new device from Leapmotion! The technology promises extremely accurate finger tracking, which is precisely what we are looking for as we try to bring gesture interactive applications closer to the user. With technologies like XBox Kinect we have already mastered full-body interaction on large displays in public venues, but the Leap promises to bring similar if not better experience to individual users in front of their own displays. We also think this is a huge step forward for augmented reality applications, and we are taking full advantage of it!

The theme of this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2012, “Women and Girls in ICT” was elaborated during the round table at Faculty of Social Sciences. The debate hosted by Jana Petkovšek Štakul included many successful women from ICT including UNIKI CEO Mija Lorbek among other guests.

The purpose of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide. 17 May marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union. ICTs are tools that can help accelerate progress towards achieving gender equality, and it is for this reason that ITU Council proposed that we focus our efforts this year on women and girls, using the power of ICTs to provide new digital opportunities to end discrimination and empower the female half of the world’s population to achieve their rightful place as equals in the world.
